The 25th K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament returns to the Palerno Center (former St. Lucy’s Hall) in Campbell in April.

The tournament will be held every Monday, starting April 9, with the championships on April 30.

The tournament is open to all boys and girls in high school.

Last year over 150 students were entered and we crowned 35 champions,” said tournament founder and director Chuck Nelson, 73. “This year, we hope to eclipse both totals.”

Every participant agrees to refrain from drug or alcohol use while in the month- long competition.

“This is what we are proudest of,” said Nelson.

The double elimination tournament is made up of 15 weight classes with three divisions — Underclass (9th-10th graders), Upperclass (11th-12th) and a Female Division.

Preliminary bouts will be comprised of three 45-second bouts with a one-minute break between rounds. The championship will have one-minute rounds.

The tournament is designed for beginners with safety as the highest priority.

“Short rounds, extra-padded headgears and 18-ounce gloves help keep participants safe, but competent referees and cornermen are also integral to ensure safety with roughly 40 fights each night,” said Nelson.

Registration will take place on March 24, 31 and April 7 at Dick’s Sporting Goods stories in Niles and Boardman.

The Niles location will have sign-ups from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, with Boardman location registration from 2-4 p.m. Students under 18 require parental consent. A $25 registration fee will be collected to cover the cost of physical exam and insurance for participants.

Tickets for the event will be $9 for students and $10 for adults and will be available at the door each night of the event. Doors open at The Palermo Center April 9 at 6 p.m. with the first bout hitting the bell at 7.
